Training Overview

SUFA equips participants with practical, non-clinical skills to take early, compassionate action when they notice signs of unhealthy substance use. The training aligns directly with SUFA’s core components–See, Understand, Facilitate, and Assist–blending evidence-informed education, lived experience, and interactive practice to build confidence and readiness.

UNDERSTANDING THE SPECTRUM OF SUBSTANCE USE

SUFA focuses on intervening during the problematic use stage before it progresses. Participants learn about the continuum of substance use–from abstinence and social use to unhealthy or dependent use–and how to identify early signs that someone may be at risk.

DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN TREATMENT & RECOVERY

SUFA promotes a person-centered approach that honors multiple pathways. Participants learn about treatment, harm reduction, and recovery options, building comfort in connecting people to appropriate resources while respecting individual choice.

DIVING INTO THE SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK OF RISK FACTORS

SUFA addresses risks before they become disorders. This section of the training explores how personal, social, and environmental factors interact to influence substance use and how community members can intervene across these layers.

REVIEWING COMMON CHALLENGES WHEN TALKING TO SOMEONE EARLY ABOUT THEIR SUBSTANCE USE

SUFA strengthens confidence in communication. Participants discuss real-world barriers–such as fear of judgment, uncertainty about what to say, or stigma–and learn conversational strategies to navigate these moments with empathy.
