SUFA Trainer FAQs

A SUFA Trainer is a trained individual authorized to deliver the SUFA curriculum using the four-step SUFA Framework. SUFA Trainers teach participants about the effects of substance use, emphasize the importance of seeking help early, and provide research-supported self-help tips and resources, all while ensuring the program stays true to its goals and upholds fidelity, confidentiality, and inclusive practice standards.

To become a SUFA Trainer, you must complete the SUFA Train-The-Trainer Program. The steps include:
Discuss your participation with your employer, as many organizations cover the cost when staff provide training to employees, volunteers, or clients. Individuals unaffiliated with an organization can also become a SUFA Trainer.
Submit a payment of $1,950 to cover the cost of the training.
Schedule and attend the required two-day training.

Ideal SUFA Trainers typically have:
Documented experience in facilitation, teaching, training, or public speaking.
Comfort discussing sensitive topics, such as substance use, stigma, and mental health.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Personal or professional experience related to behavioral health, recovery, or substance use support. Clinical licensure is not required.

You should expect to spend up to 20 hours in total, including required prework and the live, virtual two-day training.

No. Completion of the train-the-trainer course does not guarantee certification. All participants are evaluated throughout the training process, and certification decisions are based on multiple factors, including engagement, demonstrated proficiency, and participant feedback.

SUFA Trainers are assessed on:
Level of engagement and participation
Ability to understand and deliver SUFA content
Facilitation and communication skills
Demonstrated understanding of SUFA’s mission and approach
Ability to model empathy, inclusivity, and cultural humility
Commitment to program fidelity, confidentiality, and professionalism
Once certified, participant evaluations and feedback also inform ongoing certification status.

Yes. You are required to attend the full two-day training and remain actively engaged throughout, including keeping your camera on. Full participation is a core requirement of the train-the-trainer course. If you need to leave early or are unable to complete the entire training, you will be required to reschedule for a future session.

Certified SUFA Trainers are expected to:
Teach the SUFA curriculum with fidelity
Clearly communicate the impact of substance use and the value of secondary prevention
Maintain confidentiality and inclusive practice standards
Participate in a required refresher course every three years
Use SUFA systems and tools, including SUFA’s learning management platform and Zoom
Actively engage in practice, preparation, and ongoing skill development

SUFA Trainers have access to a resource library that includes training materials and support tools to ensure high-quality, consistent program delivery. Trainers are encouraged to use these resources actively and engage in ongoing practice to continue strengthening their skills.
