SUFA Overview

SUFA is the only adult-focused, secondary prevention training designed for use in community settings.
Secondary prevention means noticing early signs of concern and stepping in before substance use becomes more serious. SUFA helps people recognize those early changes and start supportive, nonjudgmental conversations. The goal is not to diagnose or push for abstinence, but to interrupt the progression of problematic use by engaging early, reducing stigma, and connecting people to the right next steps when needed.

SUFA is designed for employers, public health departments, nonprofits, and government agencies seeking to support employee well-being, reduce absenteeism, and respond early to unhealthy substance use with empathy and practical tools.

EARLY SUPPPORT, REAL IMPACT

SUFA equips participants to recognize early signs of unhealthy substance use and respond before it escalates into serious consequences or addiction. By learning to see with awareness, understand with empathy, facilitate with compassion, and assist with purpose, participants can start healing conversations that help people stay connected to their health, family, and community.

COMMUNITY-POWERED PREVENTION

SUFA strengthens workplaces, families, and communities by normalizing open, stigma-free conversations about substance use. Through empathy, education, and early engagement, we create a culture of prevention rather than crisis response.

GROUNDED IN LIVED EXPERIENCE

SUFA is created and delivered by individuals with personal or family experience of substance use, making the training authentic, relatable, and free of stigma.

BACKED BY EVIDENCE

Participants gain practical, evidence-informed skills such as motivational interviewing, understanding the stages of change, active listening, and setting healthy boundaries. These tools empower people to talk about substance use with compassion and confidence.
