SUFA matters
Nearly 48.5 million Americans, or about 17 percent of the population, are living with a substance use disorder. But they are only part of the story. Around one in three adults choose to abstain from substances altogether, which means more than 155 million people fall somewhere in the middle, as adults who use substances but do not meet the criteria for a formal diagnosis.
Many of these individuals still experience consequences from their use, such as missed work, strained relationships, or health challenges, and they may be at risk for developing a more serious problem. Yet because they do not meet the threshold for treatment, these early warning signs often go unnoticed and unaddressed.
More and more people are realizing that it is not necessary to wait until hitting rock bottom to make a positive change. Often the most achievable and rewarding changes come from small, intentional shifts.
SUFA is for anyone who has ever thought that they or someone close to them might be better off using fewer substances. We are here to support those early, meaningful conversations and help create healthier pathways forward.
Practical tools to help people recognize and respond to early signs of unhealthy use
Empathy-driven conversations about unhealthy substance use rooted in curiosity, not judgment
Non-clinical approaches that don’t require a diagnosis, treatment plan, or “rock bottom” moment.
Person-centered practices that focus on the individual’s unique needs, strengths, preferences, and lived experiences
We teach a compassionate, flexible approach that respects multiple pathways to recovery. SUFA empowers participants to engage earlier—with more confidence, less fear, and a greater chance of changing the trajectory before substance use becomes a crisis.
